A predecessor of Shell Oil made the most significant discovery in the history of Brunei when they drilled the discovery well at Seria in 1929. The British Shell Petroleum website reports that production from the Seria field surpassed 1 billion barrels of oil in 1991. Brunei is one of the largest oil producers in Southeast Asia, and a significant producer of LNG. The country is a Constitutional Sultanate which has been ruled by the same family for over six centuries. Brunei benefits from extensive petroleum and natural gas fields, and has one of the highest GDPs per capita in Asia, estimated at $54,800 USD for 2013.
